Emerald Isle Beaches

One of the most unique aspects of the beaches on Emerald Isle is that they are all south facing. There are only a handful of beaches on the east coast that offer south facing ocean views. So you can enjoy our stunningly beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of your beach chair, and never struggle with the morning glare reflecting off the ocean.

Emerald Isle has miles of wide sandy beaches to enjoy, and the warm waters off our coast make the beach season much longer than what most people traditional expect. Even through October our average air temperature is 75 degrees, with 70 degrees for the ocean. So the months of September and October are prime months to visit for a classic beach vacation.

Emerald Isle's beaches have avoided the commercial feel of most of the eastern seaboard, so your time on the beach is uncluttered with that over crowded feel you get most everywhere else. And if you truly want a beach all to yourself, then uninhabited Bear Island offers Hammocks Beach State Park, where you can pitch your umbrella and have football fields between you and the next group!

We love the vibrant green color of our ocean, which gives your vacation to Emerald Isle the final exotic touch which creates the recipe for a uniquely relaxing beach experience!

The Beaches

Throughout Emerald Isle there are easy access points to the beach. Most of our island is very narrow, with only a few blocks separating the ocean from the sound, so from your front door to your toes in the water is always easy. However there are a couple of beaches that stand out as ones even more unique that are worth making the extra trek to experience.

The Point

At the extreme western end of Emerald Isle is The Point, where the island tails off into a sand bar that offers a panoramic view of the Atlantic, Bogue Inlet, Bear Island and Bogue Sound. The water here is extra warm as the ocean mingles with the shallow expanse of the sound. No where else on the island gives you more of a perspective of being on an island than The Point. This is also a great launch point if you'd like to take a kayak out for a day on the water or a paddle to Bear Island.

This is THE spot on Emerald Isle to enjoy a spectacularly romantic sunset. So pack the champagne and strawberries, drop your chairs where the warm waters can caress your feet, and settle in for nature's daily show!

Hammocks Beach State Park

Past the point and Bogue Inlet lies Bear Island, a 3.5 mile long uninhabited island that presents miles of pristine beaches for your enjoyment. The island is part of Hammocks Beach State Park, that has a portion of the park on the mainland near Swansboro. Bear Island can only be reached by boat. The park operates a ferry service from the mainland to the island, and maintains a snack bar and bath house on Bear Island. So while it may be uninhabited, there are the key comforts of civilization available to the visitor.

There are several group campsites as well as additional primitive campsites which are ideal for overnight kayaking or canoe trips.
